Woman receives baby shower amid protests in Chennai’s Shaheen Bagh – India Today

Chennai News

Apart from protesting against the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), women in Chennai’s Shaheen Bagh area reportedly organised a baby shower for an expecting mother in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The ceremony was conducted at the protest site in Chennai. At the event, women protesters performed rituals by decorating Bagyalakshmi — a pregnant woman — with flowers, sandalwood paste and countless bangles. The highlight of the event was a gift pack given by Bagyalakshmi’s family to the pregnant woman that carried a message, which said: “Muslims are our relatives”.Drawing inspiration from the Shaheen Bagh protesters in Delhi, scores of women in Chennai organised a massive agitation against the new citizenship law in the city. The newly amended law aims to fast-track the process of granting Indian citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants –Hindus, Jains, Parsis, Christians, and Buddhists — who faced religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.Scores of protests have been organised in the past couple of months across the country — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Lucknow among others — demanding revocation of the new law.
