Tamil Nadu reports first case of Coronavirus; patient quarantined in Chennai Government Hospital – Economic Times

CHENNAI: A 45-year-old man tested positive for Coronavirus on Saturday, making him the first person in Tamil Nadu to be reported of having the disease.

A resident of Kancheepuram, he had returned to India from Oman and is currently in the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai.

His symptoms included a fever and cough. When he started developing difficulty breathing he consulted a doctor and was referred to a hospital in Chennai. When his uneasiness persisted, he was moved to the isolation ward in the RGGGH on Wednesday. His samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing soon after and the results were received on Saturday morning.

Eight members of his family have been placed under observation and so have 19 others, an official of the Directorate of Public Health said. Samples will soon be collected from his family members, the official added.

On Friday, the state Health Minister C Vijayabaskar had said that there are no positive cases of Coronavirus in Tamil Nadu and that 54 samples have tested negative and 1,243 people were being monitored. He also assured that 300 beds under separate isolation wards are ready across Tamil Nadu and that should the need arise, they can be increased.

The total number of people who have tested positive in India stands at 34 now with two others being reported as positive in Ladakh on Saturday.
