CHENNAI: A 19-year-old woman is battling for life at a Chennai hospital after her boyfriend decided to help her deliver their baby in secret, armed with some lessons from Youtube.
Police said the woman, a college student, and the 27-year-old man, a gas cylinder delivery man, were neighbours in a village near Ponneri and had been in a relationship for the last couple of years. On Wednesday, the woman, who was eight months pregnant, told her boyfriend that her labour pains had started.
He bought surgical gloves and blades and took her on his bike to a cashew farm near their village on the outskirts of Chennai.
The man watched some videos on Youtube and attempted to deliver the child. He panicked when the child’s hand appeared first, unlike the head in the videos. He looked for videos on what to do in the situation and forcibly tried to pull the child out and ended up pulling the hand off. The woman also started bleeding heavily and the man then bundled her on to his bike and rode 12 km to a hospital at Ponneri.
The shocked doctors there shifted her to the government RSRM maternity hospital at Royapuram, where doctors operated on the woman and delivered a stillborn boy.
The woman who lost a lot of blood is in a critical condition in hospital. Police have arrested the man and slapped a case of murder on him. They are also questioning the two families as the pregnancy could not have been concealed for so long.
