CHENNAI: The Northeast India Welfare Association, Chennai, on Friday filed a complaint with police commissioner A K Viswanathan alleging racial discrimination in the city after the outbreak of Covid-19 in China and across the world.
Northeast people are targeted as they resemble Chinese people, according to the association.
“We humbly request for a 24×7 helpline for assistance of Northeast people in Chennai as has been done in Delhi,” the association said.
Many of the Northeast students have been ordered to vacate their hostels. They were asked either to return home or go to their guardian’s residences, according to the association.
They also requested government’s assistance to stay in hostels even if food wasn’t provided.
