Chennai News

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Tamil Nadu government has been taking several measures. Apart from imposing Section 144 in the state from Tuesday evening 6pm, the state government has issued strict orders to impound the passports of those who violate home quarantine orders.

The foreign returnees have been strictly instructed by the state government to disclose their travel details to the respective district administration in the state. District collectors have also issued separate orders to foreign returnees to reveal their travel details if they had come back to India in the past three weeks.

Health Minister Dr C .Vijayabhaskar, on Monday, tweeted, “Tracked some of the travellers who violated government’s strict order to self quarantine, thus becoming a threat for the community transmission. The list of travellers is handed over to the district administration and police for tracking if anyone violates the order. Legal action will be taken.”

The state government is worried of community spread and so wants to closely monitor those who are in home quarantine and ensure that they do not skip the instructions from the government. As per the statistics put out by Vijayabhaskar, 12,519 passengers from abroad are under follow-up and 89 people have been admitted to the hospitals. A total of 552 samples have been tested, of which only nine have tested positive. Out of the nine, one patient from Kanchipuram, with a travel history from Muscat has been discharged after treatment. Out of the 552 samples tested, 503 have tested negative and 40 samples are under process.

Meanwhile, Local Administration Minister S.P. Velumani said people in 3,000 houses in Chennai have been kept under home quarantine. A green sticker has been pasted on the doors of these 3,000 houses in Chennai, where people with travel history to foreign countries have been asked to self-quarantine. The Chennai corporation has said the green sticker has been put up on the doors of the self- quarantined people to make sure that the others do social distancing from them. The corporation authorities will closely monitor the persons in the houses. The green sticker will include the name, address, phone number, number of persons under self-quarantine and the date till which the members of the houses should remain in quarantine. At least 9200 people are in self-quarantine across Tamil Nadu.

“It is an emergency situation. The people will have to take it in the right sense and cooperate with the government to stop the spread,” Chief Minsiter Edappadi K. Palanisami said in the assembly.
