Coronavirus in Chennai: Today’s news from your locked-down city – Times of India

Chennai News
CHENNAI: Amid prevalent chaos and uncertainty over access to the essential services and commodities during the lockdown, we bring you the latest updates from Chennai.
* Update at 11.24am: Seven more test positive for coronavirus in Tamil Nadu, total count 74.
* Update at 8.32am: A playground has been converted into a vegetable market at T Nagar in Chennai

*Desisting from passing any orders on a PIL that alleged ‘police excesses’ on people and motorists on roads, the Madras high court has said it did not expect people to come out from their houses unnecessarily during the lockdown period. It, however, counselled police to “adopt a sympathetic, balanced and humane approach towards the people.”
*Police in Chennai and across the state are using no force to enforce prohibitory orders during the lockdown period. Unlike their counterparts in some neighbouring states, who have been seen wielding the lathi, police here are spraying turmeric water on violators, painting their bikes in yellow, conducting general knowledge tests among other innovative methods to keep people indoors.
*About one lakh doctors engaged in private practice in the state are idle with clinics shut, but Tamil Nadu is yet to ready them to tackle coronavirus cases should there be an outbreak.
*Star hotels across the city are shut for customers due to the countrywide lockdown. While suspension of flights has led to no new bookings, the industry is staring at heavy losses as maintaining star hotels is expensive.
