After sanitizers, Chennai cops make masks for themselves – Times of India

CHENNAI: After preparing their own sanitizers, the city police have now roped in armed reserve (AR) personnel to make face masks and distribute them to those on duty during the lockdown.
As of now, thirty women personnel from the AR wing have been deployed for the job. The personnel who are trained in tailoring have brought their own machines. An expert gave them a day’s training on stitching masks.
Funded by the government, the project was started on instructions from police commissioner A K Vishawanathan. The work will be inspected on a daily basis by additional commissioner of police, headquarters (HQ), H M Jayaraman and joint commissioner, HQ, A G Babu. The raw materials have been purchased for ₹10 lakh and the machines are placed at the office of deputy commissioner of police, AR, in Egmore. Women personnel will do the stitching and men cutting.
Masks require a material called ‘melt-blown fabric’. It’s a fine mesh of synthetic polymer fibers that forms the critical inner filtration layer of a mask, allowing the wearer to breath while reducing the inflow of possible infectious particles. Everyday, they target completing 2,000 masks and as of now they would produce 50,000 masks. Once stitched, the masks will be sent to the police hospital for sterilizing, before being distributed.
“Instead of buying from outside and subjecting to quality check, police decided to stitch masks with quality fabric,” said deputy commissioner of Armed Reserve, K Soundarajan said.
Users will discard the masks after one use.
