Tamil Nadu reports 102 Covid-19 positive cases; Chennai leading with 81 cases – Economic Times

Chennai: Tamil Nadu reported 102 Covid-19 positive cases on Friday, the third consecutive day of a massive rise in the the number of cases being reported, taking the total tally to 411 in the state.

The Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Dr Beela Rajesh said 100 of the 102 people who tested positive were linked to the three-day Tablighi Jamaat conference at the Markaz Nizamuddin mosque in Delhi in mid-March.

Tamil Nadu reported 75 new cases of Covid-19 infections on Thursday following the highest jump in cases on Wednesday where 110 people tested positive.

As many as 1,500 people from the state had attended the congregation, leading to a scramble to trace, test and isolate them. The people are spread across 15 districts in the state.

“Tamil Nadu is in stage 2 of the virus spread. We tested 376 samples of people with acute respiratory infection. Only three of them tested positive,” she said when addressing the media.

She appealed to people not to stigmatise those who have been quarantined and assured that all those who have tested positive were stable and no one was on intensive care.

Dr Rajesh said the entire focus of the government was on containment. “Even if there is one positive case, a buffer zone is created and door to door surveillance is done. Around 5 lakh people were being covered under this process,” she said.

Chennai district tops the list with the highest number of cases in the State. On Friday, 81 people in the city tested positive for the Nov Coronavirus. Dindugal comes second in line with 43 cases.

According to data released by the government on Friday, 86,352 people are under home quarantine in the state. A total of 105 are in govt quarantine facilities and 580 people are under hospital isolation. So far, 3,684 samples have been tested and 484 samples are pending.
