Coronavirus: Chennai worst hit in Tamil Nadu, complete shutdown ends today – India Today

Chennai News

With more than 670 cases so far, Chennai is the region worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak in Tamil Nadu.

The normally buzzing capital has come to a standstill with a double lockdown in place: a complete lockdown between April 26 and April 29, enforced during a longer nationwide lockdown that began in March and is currently scheduled to end on May 3.

The city has no virus-free zones; the worst-hit area is Royapuram, with 164 cases. Thiru Vi Ka Nagar has 128 cases, Teynampet has 81, Tondiarpet 70, Anna Nagar 65, and Kodambakkam 60.

More men than women (65.28% to 34.82%) have been infected, mirroring a broader trend of more cases among men.

Fatalities in Chennai account for more than half of Tamil Nadu’s toll: thirteen out of 25.

While 204 people have been discharged, more than 450 continue to battle the virus.

As many as 100 out 121 new cases reported in Tamil Nadu on Monday were from Chennai.

COMPLETE LOCKDOWN ENDS TODAY

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has told collectors that all districts other than Chennai have been recovering well, and advised them to follow strict containment strategies.

He said on Wednesday that the regular lockdown will continue once the complete shutdown that began on April 26 comes to an end today.

On April 30, the public can step out to buy essentials, and shops will be open from 6 am to 5 pm, he said.

From May 1 onwards, shops will be open only until 1 pm, he said.

The chief minister has asked the public not to panic buy; he is advising them to wear face masks, and step out of their homes only to buy essentials — and to practice social distancing while doing so.
