Trucks laden with curry leaves and other vegetables arrive at Thirumazhisai market on Sunday

CHENNAI: Arrival of trucks laden with curry leaves at Thirumazhisai on Sunday evening marked the commencement of operations at the temporary wholesale market for vegetables on the outskirts of the city. About 200 wholesale vegetable traders from Koyambedu have been shifted to the facility to continue their business, a week after the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex (KWMC) was shut since it emerged as a hotspot for spreading coronavirus. Inauguration of the temporary market is expected to reduce the prices of veggies that spiralled due to its storage.
Vehicles entering Thirumazhisai are disinfected with crew members are scanned using handheld thermometer scanner.
S Chandran, secretary of Federation of Wholesale Vegetable Market Associations, said that majority of the traders will begin their business at Thirumazhisai from the wee hours of Monday. “We expect the arrival of 300 trucks ferrying vegetables. The temporary market will operate between 3.00 AM and 10.00 PM,” he said.
In an attempt to maintain social distancing, steps are being taken to cap the number of vehicles entering the temporary market. While 1000 mini-trucks for purchase are allowed inside the market, the rest will have to wait outside until a minimum number of vehicles exit the facility. According to Chandran, it is being done to ensure that market is not crowded like Koyambedu.
