Chennai: 100 cases in two weeks in Avadi Corporation, four deaths – Times of India

Chennai News

CHENNAI: While the number of cases in Chennai has spiked over the last two weeks, suburban areas in the west of the city which fall under Avadi Corporation have also witnessed a huge jump.
Only nine cases had been recorded till April 24 in the corporation limits, which is pretty densely populated as the land rates are lesser compared to that in to Chennai and the city is well connected by train and bus. It falls under Thiruvallur district.
However, as on May 20, the corporation announced that there were 141 cases, with four deaths and 39 recoveries. From just 13 containment streets on May 5, the civic body now has 56 such streets.
Speaking to TOI, corporation commissioner N Ravichandran said there were two major clusters responsible for the spike.
One was the training centres and the colony of policemen in Avadi, which accounted for around 50 cases. Another 50 cases were attributed to the vegetable traders who contracted the virus from Koyambedu.
Just like other nearby districts of Tamil Nadu, vegetable and fruit vendors from Avadi also regularly visited Koyambedu to buy at a wholesale rate and sell it at retail rates in the civic body.
“The 100 cases were of the cops, vegetable and fruit vendors and their contacts,” he said. Right up to May 4, there were only 13 cases in the corporation’s limits, Ravichandran added.
Of the four deaths, one was of a person linked to the Koyambedu and others were of contacts who had co-morbidities, Ravichandran said.
Similar to Greater Chennai Corporation, Avadi is also following containment strategies which include regular disinfection, doorto-door survey by health workers to check out fever and influenza like illness symptoms and providing Kabasura Kudineer to residents in containment streets.
