On March 21, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) announced the closure of city beaches including Marina, Palavakkam and Elliot’s until further orders.

The move was taken keeping in mind public safety in view of coronavirus pandemic. For several weeks, city residents avoided going to the beaches. Of late, many have been seen exercising, doing yoga, walking on the beach sand and boxing.

“The authorities have opened offices and shops now after months, so they can also open the beaches in the morning for workouts,” said Chennai resident M Gomathi, who was walking Marina beach.

Mylapore resident M Paulose said he was walking at the beach since he was diagnosed with diabetes. Paulose said he was exercising on his terrace during the lockdown, but it doesn’t have the desired result. So, he again started walking at the beach.
