Chennai: The death toll due to COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu rose to 479 with 44 deaths recorded on Monday.

The state capital Chennai accounted for 35 deaths. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced complete lockdown, with the exception of essential services, in Chennai and three neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu for two weeks beginning June 19 till the end of the month.

The announcement came soon after Palaniswami chaired a cabinet meeting and a review meeting with an expert committee of health professionals.

Last week, the Madras High Court had asked the government whether it had plans to impose a complete lockdown in Chennai amid the alarming rise in the number of cases in the city.

The government had then responded saying that it had no plans to go for complete restrictions in the city.

With 1,843 fresh cases reported on Monday, the total tally of cases in the state till date went upto 46,504.

The state now has 20,678 active cases.

Chennai’s contribution in the 1,843 cases is 1,257.

In Chennai alone, 382 people have succumbed to the virus till date. The capital continues to be a cause of concern when it comes to total number of cases as well contributing a sizeable number of cases to the total tally.

Tamil Nadu is next only to Maharashtra in the number of confirmed cases in the country.
