Covid-19: Chennai under curfew, police get tougher – Times of India

CHENNAI: The city virtually shut down when the lockdown within a lockdown began on Friday.
While vehicle movement was high between 9am and 10am at places like Thousand Lights, Kodambakkam, Teynampet, Tambaram and Guindy, arterial stretches like GST Road, Poonamallee High Road and GNT Road were deserted after 11am, but a few were allowed on Anna Salai till 2pm. Flyovers were closed and some roads were made one-way stretches.
Exit points at Kanathur on ECR, Navalur on OMR, Perungalathur on GST Road and at Puzhal on GNT Road were closed with barricades. Police personnel wearing face shields, masks and gloves and using drones implemented the rules. Even those claiming to be out for buying vegetables had vehicles seized if found beyond a 2km radius of their homes. Police seized 1,883 bikes, 67 three-wheelers and 47 cars in 2,436 cases and booked 989 people for venturing out without masks. The seized vehicles won’t be released soon, said police. Only vehicles with essential goods and passengers with proper epasses were allowed. Those with Covid symptoms were allowed to go to hospitals. Police commissioner A K Viswanathan accompanied by additional commissioner (south) Prem Anand Sinha and joint commissioner (east) R Sudhakar inspected the Triplicane area and later told the media that residents had cooperated well.
UNDER STRICT CONTROL: As the 12-day intense lockdown began on Friday, TOI photographers fanned out across the city to give a feel. To make the exercise, meant to contain the continuing surge in virus cases, a success police personnel deployed across the city ensured effective implementation of curbs. They examined passes and documents of every motorists out on roads, seized vehicles, deployed drones to monitor movements, intensified patrols and installed barricades on the city’s arterial roads to restrict movement of vehicles.
