Chennai: Majority of the people residing in Tamil Nadu capital want coronavirus-induced lockdown to continue in the city, a study has said. According to an online survey conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, 88 per cent of the respondents, including retired people, housewives, government employees called for the lockdown measures to continue. However, people associated with business were against it.

As per a Times of India report, the IIT survey concluded that 38 per cent of the people from Chennai wanted lockdown to continue with strict measures. 50 per cent of the city residents want the lockdown with minimal restrictions and 12 per cent called for no lockdown.

“Despite saying the lockdown is only moderately effective, a large majority wanted it to continue in some form,” professor A Thillai Rajan was quoted by ToI as saying.

The Tamil Nadu government has further extended the general state-wide lockdown from July 1 to July 31. Chennai and Madurai will continue to be under intense lockdown till July 5.

In accordance with the Centre’s guidelines, the Tamil Nadu government has banned international air travel, inter-state bus transport, metro and suburban rails, social gatherings, political, cultural, entertainment and sporting events and processions. Schools, colleges, malls, cinema halls, resorts and bars would continue to remain shut.

Interestingly, the state government has banned religious congregations and prayers in places of worship in urban areas. However, in rural areas people can visit religious places by following social distancing norms.
For death procession and marriage function, only 50 people have been allowed to attend.

Tamil Nadu will observe “complete lockdown” on the four Sundays falling in July. Only essential services will be allowed.

Tamil Nadu has the second-highest number of coronavirus cases in the country. According to the union ministry of health and family welfare, 94,049 coronavirus cases have been reported so far. 1,264 people have succumbed to the deadly contagious disease.
