Chennai: Fine up to Rs 2 lakh will be levied on people in Chennai who are caught violating COVID-19 rules in Chennai. Dr TS Selvavinayagam, director of public health, announced on Wednesday that the fine might exceed Rs 2 lakh in some cases as well. 

The director wrote to the deputy directors of health services and municipal authorities, informing them about the decision. The authorities have been asked to register cases under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act. 

Dr Selvavinayagam said that Tamil Nadu will be able to recover the cost of treatment of COVID-19 patients and the cost of sanitation by collecting the fines. 

Accused to be booked under IPC as well 

Dr Prabhdeep Kaur, Deputy Director of National Institute of Epidemiology, told The Times of India, “Super spreader usually increase caseloads across the world. Studies have shown that 60 per cent of the cases are caused by 20 per cent of people. “

Senior officials stated that they can also be booked the accused persons under the Disaster Management Act along with sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). A senior public health official said that punishments under the said provisions are more severe and also include a jail term.
