Chennai recorded 1219 cases, taking its total to 84598. Other districts like Thiruvallur (370), Chengalpattu (323), Vellore (191) reported maximum cases.

Saffron paint on the Periyar statue in Sundarapuram.
In the early hours of Friday, Dravidian ideologue and social activist Periyar EV Ramasamy’s statue situated in Sundarapuram in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district was dishonoured by unidentified persons. They had poured saffron paint over the statue and fled the spot.

Locals and members of the political party, Periyar Dravida Kazhagam had gathered near the statue and staged a protest, demanding the arrest of the person behind the act.

A seven-year-old girl has been brutally murdered in Tamil Nadu for asking her neighbour to switch on the television, police officials said on Wednesday. Officials said two people have been arrested in connection with the incident, which had sent shock waves across the state.

The girl, who belonged to Sathankulam town in Thoothukudi district, used to go to her neighbour’s house to watch TV since her place doesn’t have electricity. On the day of the incident, the child asked the neighbour for the TV remote to switch the channel while he was having an argument with his father.
