Huge waves lash the shore at Kasimedu fishing harbour on Thursday

CHENNAI: The heavy monsoon spells lashing western Tamil Nadu and the rest of the west coast may make Chennai residents yearn for some spillover showers, but according to weathermen, the city may experience only a breezy day and overcast sky for the next two days. However, that may change over the weekend, as weather watchers said the city could get rain for at least three days due to a strong wind convergence.
The regional meteorological centre’s forecast said the sky is likely to be partly cloudy. “Minimum and maximum temperature will be around 35 and 28 degrees Celsius for the next 48 hours.”
N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD, Chennai said heavy scattered and heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rain is likely to occur over Nilgiris distrct and heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Coimbatore and Theni districts for the next 48 hours due to strong south-westerly winds. “The sky condition in Chennai will be partly cloudy.”
On Thursday, Chennai skies were mostly overcast through the day while the impact of southwest monsoon getting vigourous in other regions of the country could be seen off the coast with high waves from the rough sea conditions crashing along the coast. IMD has also issued warnings to fishermen along the east coast. Fishermen were advised not to put out to sea till 11.30pm on August 7 as high waves in the range of 3.5m-4.3m have been forecast along the southern coast of Tamil Nadu from Kolachal to Dhanushkodi. Surface current speeds vary from 63cm per second to 92cm per second.
While monsoon rain may continue, a strong wind convergence closer to Chennai could bring rainfall in the city. “Usually before the formation of a system, we may get some rain because the westerlies could reduce a bit in strength over this part of the region allowing the easterlies in and this will align the wind convergence in our favour. We could see rainfall for at least three days from August 9,” said weather blogger Pradeep John.
According to IMD’s regional weather inference, a low pressure area is likely to develop over westcentral and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around August 9.
“The system being the second one forming this month is likely to take a southerly track and cross south Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coast more likely on August 9. A fresh wave of monsoon rain is going to run across the eastern and central parts of the country. This rain may travel right up to Gujarat around the middle of next week,” said a post by Skymet Weather.
