Coronavirus in Tamil Nadu: Covid-19 cases in Chennai fall below 1,000-mark – Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 119 deaths and 5,880 fresh Covid-19 cases, which pushed the toll to 4,690 and cumulative case tally to 2,85,024.
At least 65,189 people were tested in the last 24 hours.
A total of 6,488 people were discharged taking the total number of people discharged people to 2,27,575. At the end of the day, there were 52,759 active cases.
Cases in Chennai fell below the 1,000-mark. The city reported 984 fresh cases and 24 deaths.
Chennai together with Chengalpet (319), Kancheepuram (166) and Tiruvallur (388) recorded 1,857 cases and 43 deaths.
There were 20,271 people still under treatment in the region. The other northern districts – excluding Chennai region– together recorded 1,153 cases and 20 deaths.
Ranipet (253), Tiruvannamalai (252), Cuddalore (212), Vellore (158), Kallakuruchi (139) reported cases in three digits. While Tiruvannamalai recorded six deaths, Vellore reported five.
The northern districts added 3,010 fresh cases and 52% deaths (63).
The southern districts together reported 1,501 cases and 29 deaths. Eight of the ten districts recorded a rise in three digits – Theni (351), Tirunelveli (200), Tuticorin (195), Kanyakumari (187), Dindigul (134), Tenkasi (117), Madurai (109) and Virudhunagar(101) while Ramananathapuram (43) and Sivaganga (64) recorded a two digit increase. Tuticorin recorded six deaths and Kanyakumari registered five deaths. There were 14,552 active cases in these districts.
The central districts had 763 cases compared to 603 in the west. However, the eight western districts reported 19 deaths – including six in Salem and five in Coimbatore — compared to 8 in the central zone.
Coimbatore topped the charts in western districts with 228 fresh cases. Thanjavur in the centre had 217 cases.
Pudukkottai (173) and Trichy (105) and Salem (168) reported a three-digit increase. The Nilgiris reported the lowest rise (13) followed by Dharmarpuri (16). While the centre had 4,599 active cases, the west had 4,390.
