CHENNAI: A six-year-old boy slipped and fell to his death from the third floor of an apartment complex at Anna Nagar on Sunday afternoon.
Police, who identified the deceased as Ashish, suspect he may have been leaning over the parapet and may have lost balance. His father Prem, a native of Nepal who was a security guard at the same building, was asleep at the time.
Around 4pm, people on the ground floor heard a loud noise and rushed to the spot. They found the boy lying unconscious. Another guard rushed to wake Prem up. Ashish, who had suffered an injury to the right side of the dead and fractured a hand, was rushed to the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the boy used to climb on to the parapet as well as a pipe on the terrace to play.
His parents had warned him several times and always had to keep a eye on him. On Sunday, an officer said, Prem had latched the door from inside, but the boy managed to open it after climbing onto a chair. His younger brother Asif, 2, saw him fall, but couldn’t alert their father, the officer added.
Prem had been working in the building on Sixth Avenue, Z Block, for the past eight years. He was given a room on the third floor where he lived with his wife Yashika, 23, and their two sons. A cake shop occupied the first and second floors.
Around 3pm on Sunday, Yashika, who was employed as a domestic help in a few houses in the locality, left for work after telling Prem she would be back in an hour. Prem, who had come off his night shift, went back to sleep. He was informed of his son’s death by a colleague. Police registered a case of death caused by an accidental fall and are investigating.
