Drug peddler shot dead in Chennai police encounter – Times of India

CHENNAI: A drug peddler was shot dead at Ayanavaram in Chennai on Friday morning when he tried to escape after attacking a policeman who was part of a team of cops who cornered him at his hideout.
The deceased has been identified as Sankar, 49, who was involved in drug peddling at Ayanavaram and also in parts of North Chennai. Sankar was involved in four murders, four attempt to murder cases and 29 hurt and extortion cases, police said.
Based on a specific tip-off, the Ayanavaram police, team led by the inspector Natarajan, went to the New Avadi Road area to nab the drug peddler.
Sankar attacked a policeman named Mubarak and tried to escape. Immediately, the inspector opened fire at Sankar using his service pistol.
Sankar was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where doctors examined him and declared that was “dead on arrival.”
The Ayanavaram police registered a case and forwarded it for a magisterial inquiry as per the routine procedure to comply with the guidelines.
Senior police senior officials visited the encounter spot and further investigations are on.
