Man, 80, found hugging wife’s corpse, dies in Chennai – Times of India

CHENNAI: The octogenarian who was found lying hugging the corpse of his wife in Kodungaiyur and admitted to Government Stanley Hospital died without responding to treatment on Wednesday.
Police rescued A N Ponnumani, 80, and admitted him to the government hospital as he was extremely famished. Ponnumani and P Komala, 70, had been staying in a house at Muthamizh Nagar in Kodungaiyur since 1991 and they didn’t have any child. Ponnumani was a retired staff of Chennai corporation while his wife was a homemaker. The couple depended on the pension money.
After neighbours did not see the elderly couple for over a week and smelt a foul odour emanating from the house they alerted the police control room. A team led by inspector C Velu rushed to the house. They broke open the main door and recovered the bloated body of Komala.
Ponnumani was also found lying unconscious hugging his wife. While police initially thought the couple was dead they realised Ponnumani was still alive while lifting him and rushed him to Government Stanley Hospital.
Police said the elderly man was lying unconscious when he was rescued from his house.
Doctors at the hiospital examined him said that the senior citizen was extremely famished as he didn’t eat for couple of weeks. Due to this, his pulse was low. Despite best efforts to revive him he failed to respond to the treatment.
