CHENNAI: Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu is nearing another grim milestone — five lakh cases. The state reported 5,495 cases and 76 deaths on Saturday, and the total tally touched 4, 97,066 and the toll reached 8,307.
As many 6,227 people are discharged on Saturday, pushing the cure rate close to 90%. There are 47,110 active cases in the state. The case fatality rate was below 2% and the active cases rate dropped to 9%.
Public health officials say they were prepared to see a surge with more businesses, commercial establishments and hospitality services opening up.
“We want people to wear masks, wash hands with soap frequently and maintain social distance. That is the only way to contain the spread now,” said health secretary J Radhakrishnan.
On Saturday, Chennai reported 978 cases and 17 deaths, while the three neighbouring districts, Tiruvallur (299), Chengalpet (267), and Kancheepuram (133), together clocked 699 cases and 14 deaths. The other northern districts together recorded 912 cases and 14 deaths.
The western zone had 10,837 people still under treatment. Coimbatore (428) and Salem (289) had the most fresh cases in the west. There were 22 deaths in the zone, of which eight were from Salem and six from Coimbatore.
Southern districts reported 716 fresh cases and seven deaths.
The eight central districts reported 675 cases and two deaths.
