CHENNAI: Two burglars saw their luck run out after they were trapped inside the shop they broke into in Pallavaram.
According to police, around midnight, two men broke into a medical store at Bharathi Nagar to steal pain killer tablets. They left the shutter half open. As the two were busy hoarding medicines the shutter rolled down and the shop was automatically locked from outside.
Desperate to get out, the two tried all tricks to open the shutter but in vain.
Left with no option, they had to raise an alarm to free themselves when the store owner, Thameem Ansari, 28, who stays at an adjacent house rushed in.
But suspecting that they could be burglars Ansari put a lock outside the shop and alerted police.
The Pallavaram police reached the spot and pulled the two burglars out. They were identified as Venkatesh Raja, 20, of Karthik, 19, of Tirisulam. Police said the two were involved in robbery and waylaying cases in the city.
The two came to buy painkiller tablets from the shop without prescription. Since they ran out of money, the duo decided to steal the tablets as they knew where the tablets were kept in the store. “The shutter if not fully opened will close automatically and latch itself from outside,” said an investigating officer.
Police said the shop did not have a CCTV camera. They had already advised the shop owner to install one when there was a burglary six months ago, police said.
