Tamil Nadu Chennai Coronavirus News September 28, 29 Highlights: Ahead of the onset of the northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu in October, parts of Chennai received heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms on Monday afternoon, bringing some respite from the heat in the city.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, parts of the city are likely to receive lights showers and thunderstorms over the next 48 hours owing to a cyclonic circulation.

A few roads in the city reported water logging following the brief showers.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu recorded 5,589 positive cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the state tally to 5,86,397. Among these, Chennai reported 1,283 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 1,64,744.

Tamil Nadu recorded 70 deaths on Monday, putting the state toll at 9,383. 64 of them had succumbed due to comorbidities.

In a sign that the leadership tussle in All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is to continue, the party failed to nominate a CM candidate for the upcoming 2021 Assembly elections in its executive meeting on Monday.

Addressing reporters after the meet, AIADMK deputy coordinator KP Munusamy said party coordinator Pannerselvam and joint coordinator Palanisami would together announce the CM candidate on October 7.

However, there was no information on the 11-member steering committee, which has been the primary demand of the OPS faction ever since its merger with the party in 2017.

Amid protests against the bifurcation of Chennai’s Anna University, members of the Anna University Teachers Association (AUTA) have written to Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit seeking his appointment to discuss the issue.

Voicing their dissent, AUTA members have been protesting since Monday. Wearing black badges, AUTA said that the bifurcation will undo all the hard work that had gone into making Anna University a reputed institute of learning in Chennai.
