CHENNAI: A 22-year-old man committed suicide by slitting his throat with a broken glass piece at his girlfriend’s house in Virugambakkam in Chennai in the early hours on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as G Jeevanandam, a graduate and a native of Ariyalur.
The man, who was staying at his girlfriend’s home, tried to kill her and her parents by trying to explode a gas cylinder, according to police. The girl and her parents, who were in their bedroom, woke up around 3am hearing a noise. They saw Jeevanandam dragging a cylinder to the hall. Realizing that the man was trying to explode the cylinder, the woman and her parents pushed him out of the house and locked the door.
They alerted the city police control room about the incident. Before the cops arrived, the man had slit his throat. Police found him lying unconscious in the corridor. He was sent to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Jeevanandam and the woman met during a college event held in Gujarat on January 31 last year. They became friends, and Jeevanandam visited her house as a friend whenever he came to Chennai.
He came to her house on September 29, and he continued to stay there without any plan of leaving. When her parents asked him about this on Friday night, he told them that his girlfriend should not marry anyone and that he would also remain single.
The woman and her parents were shocked. Later, Jeevanandam apologized to them. He informed them that he would leave for his native place the next day and slept in the hall.
The Virugambakkam police registered a case, and further investigations were on.
