Five from Tamil Nadu among top-100 JEE rank holders – Times of India

CHENNAI: Five students from Tamil Nadu, including four from Chennai, have secured top-100 ranks in JEE Advanced exam. Results for the exam were declared on Monday.
Jai Murhekar, the top ranker from the state, secured the 49th place. Of the 1,50,838 candidates who appeared for JEE Advanced, 43,204 candidates have qualified.
Since they have been preparing for several years, many toppers said the Covid lockdown did not affect their preparation for JEE.
Murhekar scored 293 out of 396. “I am planning to join IIT Madras,” he said. The top ranker from the state said he has been preparing for six to seven hours every day even during the lockdown. “For relaxation, I used to spend time on social media and watch TV. I also like playing outside,” he added.
Ashwin Ramachandran who got 56th rank said, “I am planning to take computer science in IIT Bombay. If I do not get then I will join computer science in IIT Madras.” He scored 290 out of 396.
Aditya C secured the 75th rank and said he will join either IIT Bombay or IIT Madras. “I will join either electrical or computer science engineering,” he said, adding that choosing which question to answer in the advanced exam was key to his success.
B Guruvayurappan from Coimbatore, who scored 288 out of 396 and got 61st rank, said he was yet to decide on the course and institute. He said his preparation was not affected due to the Covid-19 as the coaching institute completed the portions before January 2020. “They conducted the tests and doubt clearing sessions online,” he said.
Experts said there was not much difference in ranks and marks this year compared to last year. The 100th ranked candidate got 270 marks last year while it is 280 this year.
“More number of students from Tamil Nadu featured in all-India ranks compared to last year. Quality of ranks also improved this year. It is mainly because students have got more time to prepare for JEE exams due to Covid-19,” said B Pavan Kumar, deputy director, FIITJEE, Chennai. Both JEE main and advanced exams were postponed by four months due to the pandemic.
Chandan Chand, regional director of Aakash Institute, said IIT Madras zone has performed well this year. “Many students from this zone have featured within top 1,000 ranks,” he said.
