CHENNAI: A gang of about 100 people vandalised a supermarket at Thousand Lights on Thursday and escaped with goods worth Rs 15 lakh after attacking the manager of the store with a hammer due to a rental dispute between the shop’s owner and the house owner.
Manager Quidbuddin, 55, has been admitted to a private hospital.
The staff told police that around 9am about 10 men, all wearing white trousers and white shirts, barged into the shop and threatened the manager and the staff. A few minutes later, about 90 more men, all in their teens, entered the shop and started ransacking it.
After one of the customers called, a police team rounded up about 50 people including a few lawyers, who accompanied the gang and took them to Thousand Lights police station for questioning. By the time police arrived some of the attackers had escaped in a minitruck.
It is said that there is an ongoing dispute between the shop owner, Shanawaz and the landlord, Shafeequa Safai, over the payment of rent and there is a case pending at court. Police are investigating if she has any role in the incident. A police officer said 19 people including a few BJP functionaries have been remanded.
