Chennai, Hyderabad Coronavirus News Live Updates: Tamil Nadu recorded 1428 positive cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the state tally to 7,84,747. Among these, Chennai reported 397 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 2,16,119.
The state recorded 11 deaths on Wednesday, putting the state toll at 11,733. All 11 of them had succumbed due to comorbidities. The state discharged 1398 patients following treatment, putting the total number of recoveries at 7,62,015. As of Wednesday, the number of active COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu is 10,999. Till date, 4,74,195 males, 3,10,518 females and 34 transgenders have tested positive for the virus in the state.
According to a bulletin released by the Health and Family Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu, 1,21,93,913 samples from the state have been sent for testing till date, with 68,854 samples having been sent yesterday. There are 221 COVID-19 testing facilities in the state, out of which 67 are government and 154 are private facilities.
Senior DMK leaders TR Balu, K Ponmudy, Duraimurugan and KN Nehru were also present at the meeting.
Amid buzz of a seat-sharing deal ahead of the state elections next year, All India Congress Committee in-charge of Tamil Nadu Dinesh Gundu Rao called on Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief MK Stalin at the party headquarters in Chennai. They were accompanied by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee leader KS Alagiri. Senior DMK leaders TR Balu, K Ponmudy, Duraimurugan and KN Nehru were also present at the meeting.

The meeting lasted for less than half-an-hour. Speaking to reporters, Rao said, “I know the media has been speculating a lot about this meeting. But our agenda was different. We met DMK president MK Stalin to discuss Rahul Gandhi Ji’s programme in Tamil Nadu. We invited him to join our campaign.” Alagiri reiterated that the meeting was more about inviting the DMK leader for Rahul Gandhi’s campaign in Tamil Nadu and there is still time to discuss seat-sharing.

The high-voltage campaign ahead of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation did not translate into votes on election day. After final scrutiny and tallying, officials announced late Tuesday night a final turnout of 46.6 per cent. Polling on Tuesday started slow with only 3.96 per cent of votes cast between 7 am and 9 am. It increased to 8.9 per cent by 11 am, and to 18.20 per cent at 1 pm. By 4 pm, only 22.06 lakh voters had exercised their franchise.

This was only 29.76 per cent of the total voters. Till 5 pm, according to the state election commission, the total voter turnout was 36.73 per cent. With only one hour left until closing, it was feared the 2020 GHMC election would witness the lowest turnout. The SEC did not announce the final voter turnout till midnight.
