Tamil Nadu CM slashes Chennai Metro fares ahead of assembly polls, comes into effect from today [DETAILS] – Times Now

Chennai: Ahead of Assembly polls in the state, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has slashed the fares of Chennai Metro rail to make it more affordable. The new fares will come into effect from Monday.

According to the state government,  the maximum fare has been reduced to Rs 50 from Rs 70, while the minimum fare will remain at Rs 10. The reduction in the fare has been done taking into consideration the feedback given by people, the CM had announced on Saturday.

“Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru. Edappadi K Palaniswami has issued a Statement on Chennai Metro Rail Fare Reduction,” the CMRC said in a tweet.

As per the new fare structure, the commuters will have to pay Rs 10 for a distance of upto two kilometres. For a distance between two and five kilometres, the fare is Rs 20, while they will have to Rs 30 for a distance of 5-12 kilometres. For up to 21km the fare will be ₹40 and for more than 21km the fare will be ₹50.

A further 20 per cent discount will be provided on the fare to those who book their metro tickets using the QR code or CMRL smart cards. Passengers travelling on Sundays and public holidays will now get a 50 per cent discount on their daily tickets (not for daily passes).

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the Chennai Metro Rail Phase-I extension. The total project cost Rs 3770 crores. This 9.05 km long extension will link North Chennai with the Airport and Central Railway Station. 

PM Modi also inaugurated the fourth Railway line between Chennai Beach and Attipattu. This 22.1 km section, laid at a cost of Rs 293.40 crores, traverses through Chennai and Thiruvallur Districts.
