COVID-19: Tamil Nadu adds 2,089 new cases, 9 more deaths; state’s weekly case average witnesses four-fold jump – Times Now

Chennai: With 2,089 new cases on Saturday, Tamil Nadu’s weekly average of daily cases saw a four-fold jump in one month. The weekly average of daily cases was around 486 on February 27. However, it went up to 1,655 on Saturday.

According to the report in the Times of India, the directorate of public health in February last month said that by November 22, at least 31,6% of people in the state had developed antibodies for Sars-Cov2 with an estimated 22.6 million infections, the ‘herd immunity’ also seems to have little impact to curb the spread in the state.

As per an analysis, over the same thirty days, there was a steep rise in spread of the virus as the doubling period the time taken for the cases to double from their current level dropped from 1,267 to 352 days.  

Experts say that it is difficult for them to predict when the active cases would rise before coming down.

COVID in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu recorded nine deaths on Saturday, thus pushing the total fatalities to 12,659. The total number of cases in the state now stands at 8,88279. Across the state, 12,157 people are undergoing treatment.

As per TOI, “Going by the trend, we only know that the 31% seropositivity rate had made little difference to the spread of infection, said National Insititute of Epidemiology deputy director Dr Prabhdeep Kaur.

As per the officials, they have no data on the number of people who are coming with reinfection or those infected with the virus again after the second dose of vaccination.

COVID cases in Chennai

Chennai reported 775 new cases on Saturday and four people succumbed to the deadly contagious virus. Other districts like Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram saw 186, 104, and 82 cases respectively.

After Chennai and Chengalpet, Coimbatore added 185 new cases. Thanjavur saw 66 new cases and 11 districts reported fresh single digits cases.
