North Chennai biryani shops make a killing – Times of India

CHENNAI: A majority of eateries and restaurants in the city downed their shutters during polling hours on Tuesday for fear that customers won’t turn up. This affected individuals who completely depend on eateries.
While a handful of bakery and juice shops remained open, biryani shops in north Chennai recorded brisk business. Several chain of restaurants and standalone eateries were out of bounds for food delivery apps on Tuesday.
A chain of leading vegetarian restaurants opposite Perambur railway station was closed with one eatery notifying customers that the restaurant would reopen after 4pm in the evening. The row of dhabas and eateries dotted along the Ennore Expressway that largely caters for truck drivers were also shut. At Royapuram, people left in huff after a popular chain of restaurant was not available for breakfast.
Muthupandi, who operates a small eatery at Moolakadai, said his footfall fell by 50% on Tuesday. “I declared a holiday for my workers,” he said. Howver, an exclusive biriyani outlet next to his shop was teeming with customers. There were queue across biryani shops in north Chennai in the afternoon. With deliveries outnumbering dine-ins, several biryani shops laughed their way to the bank.
