Chennai: In a tragic incident in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai, a woman suffering from the disability of poor vision drank died after she drank acid thinking that it was water.

How it happened

According to the police, the deceased woman, identified as 51-year-old Menaka, used to stay with her son Selvam and daughter-in-law in Chennai’s Ayapakkam neighbourhood. She had eyesight issues and was suffering from diabetes.

Menaka was alone in the house while her son and daughter-in-law had gone to work on Saturday. Around 11 am, she took pills for managing her diabetic condition. While looking for water, she saw a bottle kept on the top of the refrigerator. She chugged the liquid out of the bottle thinking it was water, but it was cleaning acid.

As acid caused burns in her mouth and throat, she screamed in pain, following which her neighbours came rushing to her house and dashed her to a nearby private medical facility for treatment. “She cried in pain immediately and neighbours rushed her to a private hospital nearby. She was later shifted to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where she died on Saturday evening,” a report published by The Times of India stated.

Police said the deceased woman, due to disability of low vision, mistook acid for water. Her statement couldn’t be recorded as the acid had caused severe burn injuries in her mouth, police added.
