COVID-19: With 13,776 new cases, active caseload in Tamil Nadu inches closer to 1 lakh – Times Now

Chennai: Tamil Nadu on Friday added 13,776 new COVID-19 cases. With this addition, active cases in the state are now closer to the 1 lakh mark. Almost 78 people died due to the deadly contagious virus and over 8,000 were discharged on Friday in the state. 

The cumulative death toll in the state touched 13,395 and 95,048 people are seeking treatment for coronavirus infections. The case tally has touched 10,51,487 in the state.

Coronavirus in Chennai

Capital Chennai saw 3,842 fresh COVID-19 cases and 37 deaths on Friday. Thirty other districts in the street saw a three-digit rise in cases. Along with 985 cases, Chengalpet saw ten deaths followed by Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, and Tiruvallur that reported four fatalities.

Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram saw 807 and 395 deaths respectively. In total, 6,029 cases were reported from the Chennai region, and 55 fatalities were recorded. With this, this zone now has 48% of the active cases.

Other districts in the north saw 1,290 cases and six deaths. Coimbatore saw a massive spike with 889 new cases. Eight west districts saw 2,733 new cases and five deaths altogether. In the south, Tirunelveli reported 517 fresh cases and Madurai saw 502.

As per the state health bulletin, nearly 23 districts in the state have 1,000 active COVID-19 cases. 

‘Chennai may see 19k cases per day’

According to epidemiologists at the National Institute of Epidemiology, hotspot Chennai may witness over 19,000 cases per day on May 15 if the present infection rate does not see a decline in the city, as reported by TOI.

With this, the active case in the city will stand at 1.25 lakh by May 15. Data from Greater Chennai Corporation shows that more than 218 streets in Chennai had more than 10 active cases. Also, 648 streets had more than six cases each.

Hospitals and Covid care centers are also reeling under pressure as the cases are steadily increasing.
