Chennai, Hyderabad Coronavirus May 17, 18 Highlights: Tamil Nadu on Tuesday reported 33,059 positive cases of Covid-19 taking the overall tally to 16,64,350. With 364 causalities in the past 24 hours, the death toll reached 18,369. As many as 21,362 people got discharged following treatment and there are still 2,42,929 active cases in Tamil Nadu. Among the 37 districts in the state, Chennai recorded 6,016 cases and 85 deaths. The city has 48455 active cases.

As of Monday, the number of active COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu is 2,31,596. Till date, 9,75,262 males, 6,55,991 females and 38 transgenders have tested positive for the virus in the state.

According to a bulletin released by the Health and Family Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu, 2,52,73,493 samples from the state have been tested till date, with 1,56,278 samples having been sent yesterday. There are 267 COVID-19 testing facilities in the state, out of which 69 are government and 198 are private facilities.

Superstar Rajinikanth on Monday met Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin in Chennai to extend his support to the state’s effort to battle the second wave of coronavirus. The superstar also contributed a sum of Rs 50 lakh to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Last week, the newly-elected chief minister had appealed to the public and the private organisations to generously contribute towards relief work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In another incident of caste discrimination, three elderly Dalit men were forced to fall at the feet of upper-caste Hindus over a discord at a temple festival at Ottanandal village which falls within the Tiruvennainallur block in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu. The village holds a population of close to 40 Dalit families and more than 200 families belonging to other castes.
