Chennai: Amid the stricter lockdown measures in Chennai, the city police have seized hundreds of two-wheelers for the violation of COVID-19 lockdown protocols. As per the report, Chennai Police have identified that over 13% of motorists on the roads during the lockdown are out without any proper reason. 

While commenting on the incidents of flouting COVID-19 norms, police commissioner Shankar Jiwal said, “Police can start by introducing himself and on record can ask the motorist where he is going. This can be used in the future if there is any problem,”  as saying was quoted by the New Indian Express.   

Greater Chennai city police commissioner also said that over 37 per cent of the people were going for medical emergencies or were the medical staff.   

The report further suggests that during the lockdown period, motorists on the streets carried e-pass of essential workers. 

The administration is planning to deploy police at 10 important junctions in the city in a bid to keep an eye on COVID-19 lockdown Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) violators. The police will also check profiles of motorists under several categories like media, health staff, government employees, delivery agents, and others.   

Coronavirus situation in Tamil Nadu  

According to the state health bulletin, Tamil Nadu logged 30,016 fresh cases of coronavirus on Saturday. The state also reported 486 fatalities due to the deadly contagious COVID-19 virus which took the cumulative death toll to 23,261. The number of cured/discharged/migrated patients count in the last 24 hours stands at 31,759. The total active cases in Tamil Nadu recorded 3,10,157 on May 29.
