The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday made six major announcements, including the construction of a 500-bed multi-super speciality hospital at Guindy in south Chennai at a cost of ₹250 crore and free city bus travel for transpersons and persons with disabilities.
The announcements were made coinciding with former Chief Minister and DMK leader M. Karunanidhi’s birth anniversary, on Thursday.
A state-of-the-art library would be constructed in Madurai at a cost of ₹70 crore in memory of Karunanidhi. The institution of ‘Ilakkiya Mamani Virudhu’ – awards for noted Tamil literary figures on a par with Kalaimamani awards; free houses for recipients of Jnanpith, Sahitya Akademi or other national/State and noteworthy awards and establishing a warehouses at a cost of ₹30 crore in Tiruvarur, are the other announcements.
The 500-bed multi-super speciality hospital would come up on the King Institute campus at Guindy in Chennai, an official release said. The state-of-the-art library to be constructed, spread over 2 lakh sq. ft. and is aimed at benefiting those from southern districts similar to the Anna Centenary Library, which has been serving the people in the northern districts and Chennai.
The free bus travel for transpersons and persons with disabilities would be allowed in town buses, similar to the scheme announced by the State government for women last month. “This order would come into force after the [COVID-19] lockdown is lifted,” it said.
The Ilakkiya Mamani Virudhu would be presented to three Tamil writers annually and it would contain a cash prize of ₹5 lakh and a citation.
Under the ‘Dream House’ scheme, a house would be provided by the State government free of cost to scholars, who are natives of Tamil Nadu and have been recipients of Jnanpith, Sahitya Akademi and other national awards, State literary awards and other noteworthy awards. The free house would be provided either in their native district or the district of their choice.
As for warehousing facilities in Tiruvarur district, a storage unit would be constructed with a capacity of 16,000 MT at a cost of ₹24.30 crore. The State will also construct 54 drying units and solar dryers at a total cost of ₹6.20 crore, it added.
