Chennai: Govt plans 5 flyovers to decongest OMR – Times of India

Chennai News

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu government has planned to build at least five flyovers on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram Road) to decongest the busy IT corridor. An announcement to this effect was made by state public works department minister A V Velu, who inspected the road and toll facilities on the stretch on Friday.
Velu also said the DMK government in 2010 had planned to construct bridges at five important road junctions between Madya Kailash and Siruseri, but the AIADMK that governed the state for the next ten years left the projects in the lurch without allocating adequate funds.
A senior official from the state highway department, who was part of a review meeting the minister held on Friday, said the estimated cost of the five bridges would be Rs 500 crore and that the officials have been instructed to take up field inspections soon.
Minister Velu has also instructed IT Expressway Limited (ITEL) to rectify issues faced by members of the public while using toll plazas on OMR, Perungudi and ECR Link Road. ITEL is a special purpose vehicle constituted to develop the IT corridor in Chennai.
Several protests have taken place in the past demanding that toll plazas within city limits be removed as they were an inconvenience to road users.
In Friday’s meeting with authorities, Velu discussed possible revenue and job losses in case the toll gates were removed. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, he has assured to take the issue to the notice of chief minister M K Stalin.
Velu also inspected bridge works at TIDEL Park signal, East Coast Road, railway bridge at Perungalathur, the one constructed across Buckingham Canal and directed his officials to speed up works.
Later, he reviewed Outer Ring Road, which was completed and inaugurated just before the assembly election in April, and wanted patch work to be completed on the stretch. The road, which was constructed at a cost of Rs 1,081 crore, has four toll plazas and steps would be taken to ensure that there are no hassles for motorists using this stretch, said an official release.
