CHENNAI: Flower Bazaar police have launched a hunt for a man who conned a jeweller posing as a doctor and escaped with eight sovereigns of gold after making the jeweller visit the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) to deliver his ‘order’.
Police said Sakthivel of Velachery, the victim, who runs a jewellery shop, said in his complaint that a man visited his showroom a few days ago and asked for gold jewellery. He spent at least half-anhour and selected a gold necklace.
After reviewing the necklace weighing about eight sovereigns, he evinced interest in buying it. The conman displayed his identity card to Sakthivel and told him that he was a doctor and wished to buy the necklace. However, he demanded the shop owner to deliver the necklace at RGGGH on Tuesday morning as he wanted to give his wife a surprise gift. He also promised to make the payment soon after receiving the jewellery.
Believing his words, Sakthivel went to the hospital on Tuesday and waited near Tower-I within the campus. Sakthivel’s ‘customer’ appeared before him and collected the necklace.
He informed Sakthivel that he would send photos of the necklace to his wife and moved a few metres away before mingling in the crowd and vanishing from the spot. Sakthivel searched for him and realised that he had been conned.
Based on his complaint, police registered a case. Flower Bazaar police have launched a hunt for the suspect with the help of CCTV footage. Further investigations are on.
