Covid: 11 Tamil Nadu districts see marginal rise in fresh infections – Times of India

Chennai News

CHENNAI: Fresh cases of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu dropped to 1,819 on Saturday, when nearly 11 districts including Pudukottai, Krishnagiri, Tirupur and Ranipet saw a marginal increase compared to cases reported on Friday. Deaths also went up to 27 from 24 on Friday.
The marginal increase in cases in these districts slowed down the rate of fall in cases. While there was a fall of nearly 42 cases from 1,872 on Thursday to 1,830 on Friday, the difference between Friday and Saturday narrowed to just 11. After discharging 2,583 people from the state Covid registry, there were 24,025 people in the active registry. “One of the key things that will help us keep infections down is individual choices and indiscretions on Covid appropriate behaviour. Masks and social distancing will play a huge role besides taking vaccines on time,” said health secretary J Radhakrishnan. “We are also monitoring the variants continuously,” he said.
On Saturday, barring four districts – Coimbatore (175), Erode (132), Chennai (127) and Salem (107) – all other districts in the state reported fewer than 100 cases. Cases in these four districts dropped marginally compared to Friday. While there were 26 districts with cases below 50, there were 12 districts with less than 25 cases each. Perambalur reported seven cases – lowest, followed by Tenkasi (9), Theni (11) and Ramanathapuram (12). On Friday, Perambalur reported 8, while Theni and Ramanathapuram reported ten each, Tenkasi had 11 cases.
Active cases in Coimbatore dropped to 2,154 on Saturday, followed by 1,684 in Erode and 1,604 in Chennai. By the end of the day, public health workers drew samples from 1.4 lakh people. Of the 27 deaths, three western districts – Coimbatore, Salem and Nilgiris – reported three each, followed by two each in Erode, Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, Kanyakumari and Vellore. While eight districts reported one death each, 22 other districts have reported zero deaths.
Meanwhile, more than 2.5 lakh people received vaccinations at the government centres, taking the cumulative dosage tally of vaccinations at public centres to 1.94 crore. Since May 1, 13.88 lakh people have taken vaccinations at private hospitals in the state.
