CHENNAI: Police on Wednesday arrested a car driver under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and remanded him in judicial custody for kidnapping a 13-year-old child in his car and sexually abusing her at his house near Thirumullaivoyal late on Tuesday.
The child had to struggle for nearly five hours inside the bathroom of his house, where she was detained by the accused, before she was rescued by police.
Police said the child was returning from a garment factory near her home after delivering some goods given by her mother on Tuesday when Kumaresan, 29, intercepted her and offered to drop her home.
Though the child hesitated to board the vehicle, he forced her to get in. Instead of dropping her home, he drove his vehicle to his house. He dragged her into his house and started sexually abusing her when she cried for help. Panicked that he would get caught, he dragged her into the toilet and locked her up before bolting from the spot.
The child’s mother approached police control room after she failed to trace her. A team from the Avadi all women police station checked CCTV camera footage along the route and found the driver talking to the child. He was later identified as M Kumaresan of Thirumullaivoyal.
Police went looking for him at his house when they heard the child murmuring inside a toilet. They unlocked the door and found her lying inside the dark toilet. She was rescued and sent to a private hospital. A medial report is awaited.
(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
