Tamil Nadu Chennai News Live Updates: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and DMK MP Kanimozhi Saturday paid floral tributes to late former chief minister M Karunanidhi, on his third death anniversary at his memorial in Chennai. Other leaders including DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran, DMK MP A. Raja, TN Finance minister PTR Thiagarajan also paid respects to the late DMK Supremo Karunanidhi. Karunanidhi served as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu for five terms between 1969 to 2011.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin Friday announced that the lockdown will be extended in the state for another two weeks till August 23 in view of Covid-19. After holding consolations with the health experts, government officials, the government has decided to reopen schools for students of classes IX-XII with 50 percent seating capacity following the Standard Operating Procedures from September 1. Medical Colleges and other medical-related Institutions including Nursing are allowed to reopen from August 16. All places of worship to remain closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to reduce large gatherings.

Dr S Ramadoss-led Pattali Makkal Katchi in Tamil Nadu on Friday announced a purse of Rs 10 lakh to the Indian women’s hockey team for putting up a good show in the the ongoing Tokyo Olympics, where the team lost to Great Britain in the bronze play-off match. PMK Youth Wing chief and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Anubmani Ramadoss said though the team had lost today’s match, it nevertheless, won hearts. There was ‘no need for tears,’ post the defeat and ‘let us be proud,’ at their feat, he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the state recorded 1,985 positive cases of Covid-19 on Friday, bringing the state tally to 25,71,383. Among these, Chennai reported 189 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 5,39,291. The state recorded 30 deaths on Friday, putting the state toll at 34,260. A total of 1908 patients were discharged following treatment, taking the total number of recoveries to 25,16,938. As of Friday, the number of active Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu is 20,185.

After the Tamil Nadu Textbook Corporation’s move to drop caste-based surnames of Tamil scholars from textbooks became a talking point in the state, its chairman Dindigul I Leoni said the names were being changed on the basis of orders issued by the AIADMK government in 2019, but it is only now that the books are being distributed.
