Chennai: Sea breeze takes a break, hot, humid weather to continue – Times of India

Chennai News

CHENNAI: The days are going to be sweltering in the coming days as the sea breeze is getting delayed in the afternoon. The night temperature has also been increasing in the last few days. On Monday, the day temperature was around 38°C during noon but the humidity level made it feel like it was above 40°C. IMD officials say that the conditions may remain the same in the coming days.
An IMD forecast for Tuesday said, “The sky is likely to be partly cloudy. Thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are likely to occur in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperature will be around 38°C and 28°C respectively.” Similar is the forecast for Wednesday.
N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said that the days were becoming hot because the sea breeze was not setting in. “Sea breeze is not setting in. Now, the breeze is from west to east so it’s hot. Usually, the sea breeze reduces the heat and sets in by around 2pm. Thunderstorms also would have reduced the temperature.”
In absence of the sea breeze, people experienced a sweltering day. The rain caused by convective activity triggered by high temperature usually reduces the temperature during the day. Met office staff said this may continue for the next few days. The coastal areas are expected to experience hotter days.
On Monday, the noon time temperature touched closer to 38.9°C, as per the live temperature monitoring system in Nungambakkam. It was 33.5°C in Ennore, 37.3°C in Madhavaram, 36.4°C in Meenambakkam on Monday.
The nights too are warmer as the temperature has touched 28°C. On Monday, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 36.1°C while Meenambakkam recorded 36.8°C. The night temperature was close to 30°C in the core areas and the suburbs. Private weather bloggers said that there was a possibility of rain.
