Tamil Nadu Chennai News Live Updates: Ahead of the 75th Independence Day celebrations on August 15 at Fort St. George, the Greater Chennai Police has announced traffic diversions in parts of the city today for rehearsals. According to a press release, there will be traffic diversions from 7 am to 10 am. The road between Kamarajar Salai and Napier Bridge up to RBI Subway North on Rajaji Salai and Flag Staff Road will be closed to traffic.

The AIADMK top leaders who met here a day after the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) raids on party colleague and former local administration minister S P Velumani, condemned the State government’s alleged political vendetta. Party’s Coordinator O Panneerselvam and Co-coordinator K Palaniswami who met at the party headquarters also hit out at the police for raiding the party organ Namadhu Amma’s office here.

Tamil Nadu recorded 1,964 positive cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, bringing the state tally to 25,81,094. Among these, Chennai reported 243 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 5,40,300. The state recorded 28 deaths on Wednesday, putting the state toll at 34,395. A total of 1,917 patients were discharged following treatment, taking the total number of recoveries to 25,26,317.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court Tuesday granted conditional bail to Kanniyakumari Roman Catholic priest P George Ponniah, accused of making derogatory remarks against ‘Bharat Mata’, Hindu religious beliefs, and against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Justice B Pugalendhi granted bail after Ponniah’s advocate submitted an affidavit undertaking that the priest would not make such statements against religious and political leaders in the future. He also said that the petitioner has heart problems and is taking treatment. The counsel added that the priest is prepared to stay away from the Kanniyakumari district.
