Chennai: New biplane cathlab will make care quicker, safer, says hospital – Times of India

CHENNAI: A city hospital said it has set up the country’s first biplane cathlab, an advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment. The biplane cathlab offers quicker diagnosis, reduces risk of radiation and improves treatment outcomes, said at MIOT International. The machine was inaugurated by Durga Stalin, wife of chief minister M K Stalin, on Friday.
The machine comes with a cone beam CT, 3D Echo and software intelligence. The treatment for stroke, which takes about two hours in a conventional cathlab, can be done in 30 minutes with this advanced equipment, the hospital said. The time taken for a CT scan is reduced to 5.2 seconds compared to 20 minutes in the conventional machine. It is estimated that the new machine will reduce the radiation exposure by nearly half, doctors said.
“Patients are given contrast dye before angiography to clearly see the blocks in the blood vessels. In a conventional lab, we inject 70ml of the dye but this machine reduces it to just 20ml. This way, kidneys don’t have to overwork to push the dye out of the system,” said hospital’s director of cardiology Dr K Jaishankar. Hospital managing director Prithvi Mohandas said patients need not pay any additional cost for treatment at the new cathlab. “The advanced technology will make it easier for doctors and safer for patients,” he said.
