Tamil Nadu Chennai live updates: The Tamil Nadu unit of BJP will protest in front of all religious places today to push the government to allow people to enter the places of worship on weekends as well. In a statement issued Monday, state president Annamalai asked the general public to take part in the protest in large numbers as it will be organised “for the welfare of the people”. Annamalai said the Tamil Nadu government, citing Covid-19, has closed the places of worship on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday when devotees usually want to pay a visit with their families.
Meanwhile, the NIA on Wednesday arrested a 47-year-old former LTTE operative in connection with the probe into seizure of 300 kg heroin, five AK-47 rifles and 1,000 live rounds of 9 mm ammunition off the coast of Vizhinjam near Thiruvananthapuram last March.
In other news, a delegation of DMK office-bearers, led by T K S Elangovan, the party’s Rajya Sabha MP on Wednesday called on Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram and handed over a dossier on grounds for opposition to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, seeking the neighbouring state’s support to fight against it.
Also, Tamil Nadu reported 1,432 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the caseload to 26,72,843 till date, while 25 deaths took the toll to 35,707. Recoveries eclipsed new cases with 1,519 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 26,20,499 leaving 16,637 active infections.
