Domestic dispute: Two end lives in Chennai’s Ambattur – Times of India

CHENNAI: An elderly couple committed suicide by immolating themselves over a long-standing dispute with their relative at Ambattur on Monday night. They ended their lives in the bathroom of their relative with whom they had a fight.
Police identified them as Janakiraman, 84, and Mariammal, 75, of Cholapuram Saraswathi Pandurangan Street. They were living with their son Yuvaraj and daughter-in-law Gomathi.
In the front portion of their house lived Janakiraman’s sister-in-law Sasikala, with her son. Her husband had died a couple of years ago. On Monday night, Yuvaraj found their parents missing from the bedroom and searched for them.
He found them lying charred inside Sasikala’s bathroom. He alerted Ambathur police, who rushed to the spot and sent the body for postmortem to Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple had a long-standing dispute with their relative over sewage water. They often picked up quarrel with each other. On Monday night, Sasikala allegedly blocked the pipeline which carried water to the septic tank. Following this, the couple were not able to use the toilet.
Frustrated over this, they were believed to have taken the extreme step. In the suicide note Janakiraman blamed Sasikala and said that she had blocked the pipe despite repeated warnings.
