Northeast monsoon picks up pace in Tamil Nadu – Times of India

CHENNAI: After rain initially skipped a few districts including Chennai, the northeast monsoon seemed to have picked up pace as heavy rain lashed many areas in Tamil Nadu on Friday that extended well into Saturday. The rain was triggered by the low pressure system that is persisting off Tamil Nadu coast. While more rain have been forecast for Chennai and suburbs for the next two days, IMD said heavy rain is likely over neighbouring Chengalpet, and Kancheepuram districts as well as many interior districts for the next two days and over north coastal Tamil Nadu next week.
The agency has also issued warning of heavy to very heavy rain on Sunday at a few places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram and Tuticorin and heavy spells over a few places in Pudukottai, Madurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Salem and delta districts. November will begin with heavy to very heavy rains over isolated places in South Tamil Nadu, heavy and heavy rain over northern districts like Vellore, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, Kanchipuram, Villupuram and Cuddalore, according to IMD. On November 2 and 3, heavy rain is likely to occur at a few places over south TN and heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over north coastal Tamil Nadu, the agency said.
Meteorologists said a low pressure system would bring all the rain. As of Saturday evening, IMD said the low pressure area is persisting over Sri Lanka off Tamilnadu coast with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. It is likely to move slowly westwards during the next three to four days.
The on and off rainfall on Saturday left puddles on the streets. Nungambakkam registered 2.6mm, Meenambakkam 6.4mm, West Tambaram 23mm, Taramani 14mm and Anna University rain gauge 8mm. It was after heavy spells lashed some parts of the city on Friday which left 34mm and 28mm in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam weather stations.
