CHENNAI: A woman police head constable died after a tree fell on her while she was on duty outside the secretariat in Chennai on Tuesday morning. A male police head constable escaped with minor injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Kavitha, 45, attached to the security Chennai police (SCP). She on duty near the exit gate of the secretariat.
The huge tree was uprooted around 9.15am. Half a dozen police personnel standing underneath the tree managed to escape. The tree fell on Kavitha crushing her to death. Head constable Murugan was trapped under a branch of the fallen tree and suffered minor injuries.
Since it was raining, there were no general public. On a normal day, there would be at least 50 people waiting to submit their petitions, a police officer said.
Kavitha is survived by her husband who is a railway employee and three children. One of her children studies in a college while the other two are school students. The family is staying at the Tondiarpet railway quarters.
