Marginal spike in cases in 17 Tamil Nadu districts including Chennai – Times of India

CHENNAI: While Tamil Nadu reported a drop in new Covid infections, Chennai recorded a marginal rise in cases. Officials said 835 people tested positive for the viral infection on Tuesday compared to 841 on Monday. In Chennai, 131 people tested positive on Tuesday compared to 126 a day ago. At the end of the day, the state discharged 924 patients and reported 12 deaths leaving 10,271 people in the active case registry.
On Tuesday, Chennai was the only district with more than 100 new cases. Twenty-eight districts recorded fewer than 20 new cases each. Among these, 18 districts reported fewer than 10 cases. Theni reported zero new cases and Perambalur, Tenkasi, and Ariyalur added two cases each.
There was a marginal increase between one and six cases in 17 districts compared to their Monday tally. The sharpest increase was reported in Tirunelveli, where new cases rose from 6 on Monday to 12 on Tuesday. In Thanjavur, cases went from 27 to 32 .
With 98 new cases, Coimbatore stood second on the new case table. Cases in Coimbatore also went up marginally from 94 on Tuesday. Chengalpet reported 70 new cases, a drop from 74 on Monday. There were more than 1,000 active cases in Chennai (1,220) and Coimbatore (1,138). Of the 12 deaths, Chennai reported four, followed by one each in Coimbatore, Salem, Thanjavur, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai and Dindigul.
The state vaccinated 1.2 lakh people on Tuesday pushing the dosage tally to 5.7 crore of the targeted 11.7 crore doses in government vaccination centres. In addition, 26.8 lakh people have taken the vaccine in private hospitals since May.
